4 Wasteland $79.99
SIDEBOARD
3 Engineered Plague $0.99
2 Extirpate $3.49
3 Nihil Spellbomb $0.25
3 Perish $2.49
2 Pithing Needle $0.25
1 Ratchet Bomb $3.49
1 Surgical Extraction $2.99
total = $784.00
Notes: Most lists I’ve seen will run 4 Sinkhole, while most will not run a singleton Sensei’s Divining Top. Since the printing of Liliana of the Veil, the card Pox itself has seen a great reduction in play. Ratchet Bomb is also a good way to deal with opposing artifacts & enchantments. This deck’s hardest matchups are aggressive decks. While most combo & control decks will have a hard time against a deck that tears their resources apart.

Elves: 2nd place of 1,365 players, Lukas Maurer, Grand Prix Ghent, July-21st-2012

4 Green Sun’s Zenith $3.99
1 Dryad Arbor $2.49
6 Forest
3 Gaea’s Cradle $139.99
1 Horizon Canopy $9.99
1 Pendelhaven $2.99
5 Snow-Covered Forest $0.49
SIDEBOARD
3 Faerie Macabre $0.25
1 Gaddock Teeg $4.99
1 Krosan Grip $0.74
3 Meekstone $0.99
1 Mortarpod $0.25
2 Pithing Needle $0.25
1 Scattershot Archer $0.25
1 Scavenging Ooze $16.99
1 Umezawa’s Jitte $25.99
1 Viridian Shaman $0.25
total = $648.00
Notes: Most Elf lists now run Natural Order as well as targets for it like Craterhoof Behemoth. Also many lists have added Bayou, Deathrite Shaman, & Cabal Therapy. But even without the black, the core of the deck is the same, it’s a fast combo deck that even when disrupted, still has an army of creatures that have to be dealt with. You could also add another Crop Rotation in place of a Gaea’s Cradle, if you want to save even more $.

Goblins: 8th place of 235 players, Erik Brown, Starcitygames Open Los Angeles, September-16th-2012
4 Gempalm Incinerator $1.49
2 Goblin Chieftain $1.99
4 Goblin Lackey $8.99
4 Goblin Matron $0.99

4 Goblin Ringleader $2.75
4 Goblin Warchief $2.99
1 Krenko, Mob Boss $1.99
1 Siege-Gang Commander $0.99
2 Stingscourger $0.25
1 Tuktuk Scrapper $0.25
4 Warren Instigator $7.99
4 AEther Vial $10.49
4 Cavern of Souls $14.99
14 Mountain
4 Wasteland $79.99
SIDEBOARD
3 Faerie Macabre $0.25
2 Pyroblast $0.99
3 Pyrokinesis $1.24
3 Red Elemental Blast $0.25
4 Thorn of Amethyst $2.99
total = $613.00
Notes: The most non traditional thing about this list compared to the average goblin deck list is the lack of Mogg War Marshall & Rishadan Port. However, this list & some others have successfully made it to the top tables without the cards. Also you can always upgrade to them later if you really find yourself enjoying the Goblin tribe. If you can avoid the unfair decks, the ability for Goblins to overwhelm the opponent is what makes the deck so powerful. Even after a complete board wipe, the Goblins just keep coming.

Merfolk: 16th place of 223 players, Sammy Tukeman, Starcitygames Open Las Vegas, July-22nd-2012
4 Coralhelm Commander $2.99
4 Cursecatcher $2.99
4 Lord of Atlantis $3.99
4 Master of the Pearl Trident $1.25 $0.99

1 Dismember $0.99
4 Force of Will $79.99
1 Umezawa’s Jitte $25.99
1 Cavern of Souls $14.99
15 Island
4 Mutavault $19.99
SIDEBOARD
1 Blue Elemental Blast $0.29
1 Dismember $0.99
1 Flusterstorm $13.99
1 Grafdigger’s Cage $0.99
1 Gut Shot $0.99
1 Kira, Great Glass-Spinner $5.49
1 Llawan, Cephalid Empress $2.99
2 Relic of Progenitus $1.49
2 Spell Pierce $0.99
4 Vapor Snag $0.49
total = $601.05
Notes: This deck is one of the more user friendly decks in the format. Meaning that whether you’re newer or experienced in Legacy, all you have to do is drop creatures, swing, & counter the most relevant stuff. The one card missing in this deck list that is in 90%+ of others though, is Wasteland. But I also have to give a nod about another list I ran across that was even cheaper than this, which also had a higher placing finish, but wasn’t running Wasteland or Force of Will, making the deck about as cheap as Merfolk can get. However, Force of Will is too important. I noted this list for that reason, & it’s still way under $700.00.

MUD: 5th place of 321 players, Cleveland Rhoades, Starcitygames Open Atlanta, April-7th-2013
1 Blightsteel Colossus $11.49

4 Metalworker $12.99
1 Steel Hellkite $0.99

3 Trinisphere $2.49
1 Voltaic Key $0.50
4 Ancient Tomb $8.99
2 Cavern of Souls $14.99
4 City of Traitors $34.99
4 Darksteel Citadel $1.25
4 Great Furnace $0.99
2 Mountain
SIDEBOARD
1 All Is Dust $14.99
2 Blood Moon $6.74
2 Chalice of the Void $7.99
1 Karn Liberated $23.99
3 Phyrexian Revoker $0.49
1 Platinum Emperion $7.99
3 Tormod’s Crypt $0.49
2 Witchbane Orb $0.74
total = $616.50
Notes: This is a deck I have a bit less experience with (though some from play testing a few decks against it). Beyond that however, some MUD lists are completely colorless, while others will splash a color, this one specifically for Goblin Welder. One thing I can note is if this deck grabs your attention, get those Mox Opal’s now as they have only gone up since the M14 rule change.

Dark Depths Reanimator: 5th place of 166 players, Ross Roemer, Starcitygames Open San Diego, January-13th-2013
1 Inkwell Leviathan $1.99
1 Iona, Shield of Emeria $18.99
4 Vampire Hexmage $0.49
4 Beseech the Queen $2.49
4 Dark Ritual $0.99
4 Entomb $19.99

4 Lotus Petal $3.49
1 Pithing Needle $0.25
3 Reanimate $4.99
4 Spoils of the Vault $0.49
4 Thoughtseize $48.49
4 Dark Depths $28.49
1 Shizo, Death’s Storehouse $3.59
12 Swamp
1 Tomb of Urami $0.49
3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth $11.99
1 Wasteland $79.99
SIDEBOARD
1 Helm of Obedience $11.39
2 Hymn to Tourach $1.49
1 Iona, Shield of Emeria $18.99
4 Leyline of the Void $0.99
2 Mindbreak Trap $4.99
1 Null Rod $5.49
1 Perish $2.49
2 Ratchet Bomb $3.49
1 Terastodon $0.99
total = $613.65
Notes: When I came across this list it surprised me. It’s one of the most uncommonly seen strategies I have found at the top tables of larger events. The “combo” of the deck, is Vampire Hexmage + Dark Depths. Combined with many of the same tricks you would see from a Reanimator deck, backed up by disruption in the form of discard.

Dredge: 9th place of 91 players, Joseph Mauer, Starcitygames Open New Orleans, October-28th-2012
4 Golgari Grave-Troll $1.20
3 Golgari Thug $1.10
4 Ichorid $6.99
4 Narcomoeba $0.74
4 Putrid Imp $0.99
4 Stinkweed Imp $0.25
4 Breakthrough $1.99
4 Bridge from Below $4.99
4 Cabal Therapy $4.99
4 Careful Study $1.74
1 Darkblast $0.49
4 Faithless Looting $0.25
4 Lion’s Eye Diamond $69.99
4 Cephalid Coliseum $3.74
4 City of Brass $3.99
4 Gemstone Mine $3.49
SIDEBOARD
1 Ancient Grudge $0.25
3 Ashen Ghoul $0.49
4 Leyline of the Void $0.99
4 Nature’s Claim $0.25
2 Tarnished Citadel $4.49
1 Undiscovered Paradise $7.49
total = $444.85
Notes: Ah dredge, the deck that throws people through a loop the first time they hear about it, & then play against it. Manaless Dredge if you’ve heard of it, is not on this list because even though it’s cheaper, it’s not having the same success as traditional dredge. So much so that I can’t even recommend playing that version. As for this version however, Dredge decks run a very tight list of 60 cards with little wiggle room, so if you go over multiple top 8 Dredge decks, they will almost all look the same as this. If you want to really blow your opponent’s mind there is the transformational sideboard seen a few times: 3 Unmask / 4 Grindstone / 4 Enlightened Tutor / 4 Painter’s Servant. The strategy? Your opponent will sideboard in useless graveyard hate, & you’ll just mill them with this combo. Another note: there are usually 1 or 2 Dread Return in the deck, but this one has basically replaced those with more Ichorids.

Mono blue tempo: 8th place of 238 players, Brandon Semerau, Starcitygames Open Minneapolis, September-2nd-2012
4 Delver of Secrets $0.50
4 Jace’s Phantasm $1.74
3 Ninja of the Deep Hours $0.25
3 Snapcaster Mage $21.99
3 Spellstutter Sprite $0.49
2 Vendilion Clique $34.99
2 Brainstorm $1.50
4 Daze $2.99
2 Dismember $0.99
1 Echoing Truth $0.25
4 Ponder $0.99
3 Spell Pierce $0.99
2 Spell Snare $2.99
4 Thought Scour $0.25
2 Vapor Snag $0.49
13 Island
4 Wasteland $79.99
SIDEBOARD
3 Curfew $0.25
2 Flusterstorm $13.99
3 Gut Shot $0.99
3 Hydroblast $0.25
1 Snapcaster Mage $21.99
3 Surgical Extraction $2.99
total = $552.50
Notes: This deck is not one you will traditionally see. So rare in fact, that I have only played against it once. I was on High Tide, & it was not favorable for me. Beyond that though, I don’t know enough about playing this deck against Legacy as a whole to comment properly.

Belcher: 13th place of 279, Tyler King, Starcitygames Open Cincinnati, February-17th-2013
4 Elvish Spirit Guide $3.99
4 Simian Spirit Guide $0.99

4 Empty the Warrens $0.49
4 Gitaxian Probe $0.49
4 Goblin Charbelcher $3.99
4 Land Grant $0.49
3 Lion’s Eye Diamond $69.99
4 Lotus Petal $3.49
4 Manamorphose $1.74
4 Pyretic Ritual $0.35
4 Rite of Flame $1.99
1 Taiga $79.99
SIDEBOARD
1 Atog $0.25
1 Atogatog $0.49
1 Auratog $0.37
1 Chandler $0.25
1 Chronatog $1.99
1 Foratog $0.49
1 Goblin Game $0.25
1 Lithatog $0.25
1 Megatog $1.49
1 Necratog $0.25
1 Phantatog $0.49
1 Psychatog $0.74
1 Sarcatog $0.25
1 Steamflogger Boss $0.49
1 Thaumatog $1.00
total = $472.30 (price of sideboard cards not included)
Notes: Another crazy deck. Belcher, a deck with just a single land, is designed to combo off on the first turn. To many this is the ultimate turn 1 deck. Though it has yet to acquire a trophy in the SCG series, it has made the finals a couple times. All you really have to do with this deck is look at your opening hand, & make sure there’s an Empty the Warrens or Goblin Charbelcher in it. Other lists will run Burning Wish which can be used to net the 4th Empty the Warrens from the sideboard, increasing consistency. The “wishless” builds aim to increase their consistency by running 12 cards that replace themselves (Gitaxian Probe/Manamorphose/Street Wraith), essentially making it a 48 card deck.

Affinity: 11th place of 175 players, Kevin Green, Starcitygames Open Providence, October-14th-2012
4 Arcbound Ravager $15.49
4 Etched Champion $3.99
2 Master of Etherium $3.99
4 Ornithopter $0.50
4 Phyrexian Revoker $0.49
3 Signal Pest $0.49
3 Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas $10.99
4 Cranial Plating $1.99
4 Galvanic Blast $0.25
4 Mox Opal $34.99
3 Springleaf Drum $0.99
4 Thoughtcast $0.49
2 Darksteel Citadel $1.25
3 Great Furnace $0.99
1 Island
1 Mountain
2 Scalding Tarn $33.99
4 Seat of the Synod $1.49
4 Vault of Whispers $0.99
SIDEBOARD
2 Duress $0.25
2 Mindbreak Trap $4.99
1 Nihil Spellbomb $0.25
3 Oblivion Ring $0.49
1 Pithing Needle $0.25
1 Relic of Progenitus $0.99
3 Smelt $0.25
1 Thoughtseize $48.49
1 Tormod’s Crypt $0.49
total = $425.35
Notes: Over time, this deck has become less & less popular. But it’s still around just enough to have had success at least once (or more) in the past year or so. This specific version of Affinity also aims to abuse Tezzeret. Also if you’re wondering, Tezzeret Affinity is doing better than non Tezzeret Affinity, so I would recommend this one. All in all, your aim with Affinity is to dump your hand onto the board quick, & overwhelm the opponent before they have a chance to adjust accordingly.

Burn: 14th place of 350 players, Jay Shield, Starcitygames Open Washington D.C., August-5th-2012
4 Goblin Guide $6.99
4 Grim Lavamancer $1.49
4 Hellspark Elemental $0.99
4 Keldon Marauders $0.25
4 Chain Lightning $11.99
2 Faithless Looting $0.25
2 Fireblast $0.99
2 Incinerate $0.25
4 Lava Spike $0.99
4 Lightning Bolt $0.99
4 Price of Progress $3.99
4 Rift Bolt $0.74
2 Barbarian Ring $0.74
16 Mountain
SIDEBOARD
4 Faerie Macabre $0.25
1 Pyroblast $0.99
1 Red Elemental Blast $0.25
4 Smash to Smithereens $0.74
2 Sulfuric Vortex $3.49
3 Volcanic Fallout $0.74
total = $133.00
Notes: Someone, somewhere, will always push this deck. It deck just cares about one thing. Bring the opponent from 20 to 0, fast! The main thing to note however is that the more recent Burn decks have moved to running fetchlands for Grim Lavamancer food, & Sulfuric Vortex for the anti life gain. These replaced the Hellspark Elementals & Keldon Marauders. Though that version of burn is still well under $700.00, this cheaper version without fetchlands has still had success in the past year or so.

So there you have it. If you or your friends want to get into the format for less, here you can navigate the most cost efficient decks in the format that have actually had success. There is really nothing more to add than that, these are the decks, & these are the prices.

Until the next one, ~Feline Longmore.
